Subject overview

The aims of the Art Department is to develop imagination, creativity, independence and resourcefulness in our pupils. These aims can be developed through the teaching and learning of a variety of practical and academic skills in the areas of art, craft, design and art appreciation.

We aim to foster lifelong learning. Pupils are encouraged to visit galleries, museums and exhibitions, and to develop an awareness and enjoyment of the visual  world around them.

Junk Couture

Junk Kouture is a national fashion competition for secondary school students in TY where they create high-end couture garments from recycled materials. It promotes creativity, sustainability, and environmental awareness by encouraging students to repurpose “junk” into wearable art.

The TY class of 24-25 submitted their submission, named ‘Shielded Beauty’. The dress draws inspiration from the classic image of a knight- a symbol of protection and courage. Our knight is not a male warrior, but a fierce, empowered woman dressed in sustainable armour made entirely from recycled materials. This reimagining of the knight figure is a powerful metaphor for women in today’s world. The dress represents the strength and empowerment of women and shows the power of women as modern-day warriors.

Sustainability and gender equality are two of the biggest global issues in today’s society. Sustainability offers a platform in which we can shine a light on gender equality. Women’s empowerment is important to showing environmental challenges as it can help reach gender equality to quicken sustainable solutions. The dress is made out of recycled CDS, clothes, ribbons and various other recycled materials.

‘Shielded Beauty’ is more than just a garment- it’s a celebration of strength and female empowerment, while also promoting sustainability. It breaks stereotypes of traditions – reminding society that women too can be warriors in shining armour.
