Library

Our new school library was officially opened in 2023 by the Lord Mayor of Cork Ms Deirdre Forde.

We aim to provide a welcoming and open environment that encourages students to read more. Our school library is fully digitized – please ask Ms. Lawless for access details.

The library caters for all levels of literacy and every taste. We can offer students a wide range of teen and young adult fiction as well as graphic novels (comics), but also a great selection of non-fiction from areas such as sports, history, travel, biography, hobbies, crafts etc.

Also available are leabhair as Gaeilge and foreign language books.

All 1st year students get an introduction to the library in September/October.

The library offers a sanctuary for those students who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of a busy school and enjoy some peace and quiet in the company of a book. Here, the emphasis is on reading, as there are many other attractive activities on offer over lunchtime for students who prefer to socialise. Book Club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunchtime.

Quiet and good behaviour are expected from all visitors and school rules apply.

Activities:

Junior Juries – The KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards Junior Juries’ Programme is a unique activity for schools, libraries and book clubs, designed to encourage children and young people to read widely and to engage with reading in an innovative and exciting way. Young readers ‘shadow’ the adult judges of the book awards panel in reading, discussing and assessing the shortlisted books each year.

World Book Day – to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) – This is a great way of promoting reading across the whole school or year group. The idea is that at a set time every day for a week (or longer if possible) everyone stops what they are doing and reads for fifteen minutes. It is a shared experience, gets people talking about books and reading while conveying a strong message that the school believes in reading.

SORA – an Online Library – a collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks that our students and staff can access anytime, anywhere. The collection currently consists of over 10,500 unique titles. New titles are being added to the collections on an ongoing basis. Students can access and download books from the library anytime, anywhere via the Sora app – to a PC, laptop or Smart device.
